This is the theatrical performance directed in 2000 by Maurizio Scaparro for the Teatro Eliseo in Rome, here transformed into a digital feature film due to the director’s desire to experiment with new ways of communicating his dreams. The same cast was retained, the filming took place at the Teatro Valle in Rome, but the new medium required different rhythms and allowed for a new spatiality, making it possible to have windows opening onto Kafka’s Prague. The story, narrated by Kafka in ‘Amerika,’ is about Karl Rossmann, a young European Jew who, in order to escape a scandal caused by his emotional involvement with a maid, is sent to America like a postal package. His uncle Jacob, a true ‘uncle from America,’ finds him a secure job through which he can achieve well-being. But to fulfill this dream, which always seems within reach, Karl will have to face a wandering and tragicomic life.
