Bruna and Fabio are among the participants on a nighttime pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of the Sacred Mountain of Varallo. Bruna is praying for a cure for a disease that keeps her from continuing her profession as a pilot. Fabio, a criminologist who left her abruptly after an intense love affair, is there to keep an eye on a psychopath who is also taking part in the pilgrimage. It was on the Holy Mountain that Fabio and Bruna met for the first time so, when they encounter each other on the pilgrimage their old feelings are rekindled. The pilgrims divide into two groups, one of which stays behind. Among that group is a mad scientist named Acquero who thinks he can capture the energy of the pilgrims’ souls in a crystal, and by so doing revive his dead wife. But there is an accident and Acquero dies with one last crazy admonition: that the crystal will explode on the Sacred Mountain. Lost in the mountains, Fabio and Bruna quarrel, revealing their inability to love. Bruna feels a kind of love-hate for Fabio, accusing him of cowardice and ambiguity. But Fabio has a secret. After the death of his mother, he discovered that Bruna is actually his sister. When they get to the top of the Sacred Mountain, Fabio reveals that secret to Bruna. In the end, both Fabio and Bruna accept the joy of loving each.
