Luce Cinecittà Presents Two Titles at Locarno

Sara Fgaier’s first work, Sulla terra leggeri, is an ‘International Competition’ nominee; Adele Tulli’s new film, Real, is selected in the ‘Cineasti del Presente’ section.

Luce Cinecittà proudly presents two titles by young Italian directors at the 77th edition of the Locarno Film Festival (7-17 August). Sulla terra leggeri, Sara Fgaier’s feature film debut, is an International Competition nominee. Author of the short film Gli anni, presented at the 2018 Venice Film Festival (Orizzonti section) and winner of Best European Short Film at the EFAs and the Nastro d’argento, Sara Fgaier has worked as an editor and producer on several movies, including La Bocca del Lupo (2009) and Bella e Perduta (2015) by Pietro Marcello.

What happens if one no longer remembers the love of one’s life? This is the question at the core of the story of this director from La Spezia. The protagonist, Gian, struggles against the darkness of sudden amnesia. Miriam, his own daughter, whom he doesn’t recall due to his illness, gives him a diary he had written at twenty that revolves around Leila, a girl he had fallen in love within a single night. Only by finding her will he be able to find himself again. The cast stars Andrea Renzi, Sara Serraiocco, Emilio Scarpa, Lise Lomi, Maria Fernanda Cândido, Stefano Rossi Giordani, Amira Chebli and Elyas Turki.

Sulla terra leggeri is produced by Limen, Avventurosa, and Dugong films with Rai Cinema. International sales are handled by Rai Cinema International Distribution, while Luce Cinecittà is in charge of Italian distribution. The project was developed by TorinoFilmLab and financed by a €40K TFL Production Award.

Sulla terra leggeri

Adele Tulli’s new feature documentary Real was selected for the “Cineasti del Presente” section. Adele is back to directing after her revelation debut work Normal, which premiered at the Berlinale and won First Film Mention at the Nastri d’Argento, eventually gaining many accolades and acknowledgments at numerous foreign festivals.

The film is a new poetic and surprising journey into a world we experience daily, which has become so common not to realize how unpredictable and alienating it can be: the digital universe. This reality, which has revolutionized our lives, is investigated with the same technological, creative, and relational lenses that structure it. A documented map free from presumptions that describes a deep, alien, and at the same time familiar territory from an original and peculiar perspective.

Real is a cinematic, visionary, and engaging journey into the disembodied world of the internet, a parallel digital multiverse where everything existent is transformed from the physics of oxygen and carbon into the logic of bits. This creative documentary explores the transformation of the human experience in the digital age, shedding light on the many, at times disturbing, aspects of the digitalized and hyper-connected life: the protagonists – human, robotic, virtual – grapple with virtual relationships, digital jobs, cybersexuality, automated and monitored homes and cities of the future. The result is a self-representative culture where new addictions and pathologies, alienation, and isolation are described side to side with identities free from the physical boundaries of the body.

Real has an original and experimental viewpoint revealed through a poetical lens that scrutinizes the new digital landscape: viewers, webcams, smartphones, surveillance cameras, and mechanical and virtual glances are all new ways of experiencing reality not by giving answers or making judgments but from the inquisitive and fresh point of view of someone who landed on a new planet. R E A L takes us to a threshold beyond and within an indistinct border. With an algorithmic and visually original approach, this documentary is an immersive journey into our everyday science fiction reality: how it feels to be human in the digital age.
