The Retrospective ‘Le Siècle Mastroianni’ Opens in Paris

From September 11 to 29, Cinecittà has organized a major retrospective with Cinémathèque Française to celebrate Marcello Mastroianni’s 100th anniversary. The extensive program includes 25 titles, including three film restorations recently made by Cinecittà in 4K and presented as world premieres: White Nights, The Sunday Woman, and Splendor.

For the centenary of Marcello Mastroianni‘s birthdate (September 26, 1924,) Cinecittà, one of his dearest venues, pays him homage with a prestigious retrospective titled “Le Siècle Mastroianni,” co-organized and hosted at the Cinémathèque Française in Paris from September 11 to 29. The program includes twenty-five films chosen from an incredibly abundant filmography in terms of artistic value: masterpieces directed by his ‘alter ego,’ Federico Fellini, or by his other great working companion, Marco Ferreri, without forgetting his leading roles in treasured movies by Monicelli, Comencini, Bolognini, Scola, De Sica, Risi, Visconti, Antonioni, Petri. A true collection of Italian and European films that have forever marked the vision of generations of moviegoers. A vision that would have been different if these Masters hadn’t worked with an actor, accomplice, and uncredited co-writer like Marcello Mastroianni.

“Mastroianni’s 100th anniversary offers Cinecittà the opportunity to display its key mission to world audiences. A mission that revolves around three fundamental themes essential for the future of cinema and moviegoers: conservation, restoration, and diffusion – states Chiara Sbarigia, President of Cinecittà – Retrospectives such as “Le Siècle Mastroianni” give Cinecittà the opportunity to present the results of a complex work: among the eleven prints Cinecittà has made available, three of them – White Nights, The Sunday Woman and Splendor – land in Paris as a 4K world premiere. This retrospective is a true homage to an emblematic personality of Italian cinema, a classy actor who masterfully brought to the screen a man ahead of his time, not the stereotypical Italian male but a sensitive man capable of disclosing his own fragility and insecurity in front of a camera without feeling less of a man.”

Strongly wanted by Cinecittà and organized with Cinémathèque Française, “Le Siècle Mastroianni” screens many restored titles. The retrospective also pulls the strings together again of the fascinating relationship between Mastroianni and France, particularly Paris, where he lived the last part of his life. A relationship of art and love, which also recalls the tie between Italian and French cinema made of interaction, exchange of ideas, and dozens of masterpieces, which he is so grandly the most complicit ambassador. After Paris, the retrospective will continue paying homage to Marcello Mastroianni with a worldwide tour.
