On Set: a new tool by Italy for Movies is online

The first real-time map of films and TV series shooting in Italy, created in collaboration with DGCA and SLC CGIL

‘ON SET’, the new section of Italy for Movies – portal for locations and production incentives promoted by General Directorate of Cinema and Audiovisual of the Ministry of Culture (DGCA-MiC) and created by Cinecittà in collaboration with the association of Italian Film Commissions – is live online from today, offering a valuable constantly updated tool that provides an accurate overview of audiovisual production in Italy in real time. The section (www.italyformovies.it/filmset) marks the first initiative to comprehensively map all the sets active in Italy at any given time, offering useful information on the status of film and audiovisual production in the country that improves transparency and contributes to enhancing the territory’s visibility and attractiveness from an audiovisual and cinematographic perspective. The section is the result of the collaboration between the General Directorate of Cinema and Audiovisual of the Ministry of Culture (DGCA-MiC), Italy for Movies and the trade union SLC CGIL.

There is a detailed summary from each production, with information that includes the number of shoot days, number of crew members, the locations chosen as sets, the type of funding received, and the CNNL (National Work Contract) applied. A search engine provides access to the information in the database, which covers active sets in Italy from November 2024, offering search criteria by territory (region or city), production format (film, series, TV programme), type of production (international, Italian or co-production), start and end date of filming or by the funding received. In addition to listing the productions on set, the search results highlight statistical data relative to region, number of shoot days, format and genre, type of production, direction genre. The data provided can be exported in excel and pdf format to aid statistical or analytical consultation.

On Set is a flexible tool for analyzing and monitoring the film and audiovisual sector which contributes to the growth of the industry, a goal that the DGCA has always pursued. As of today, shared, organized data – such as the number of active sets in Italy, employment status, most sought-after locations – will be available to industry professionals with a few simple clicks. This new section will help make Italy even more attractive as a shooting location,” said Nicola Borrelli Director-General for Cinema and Audiovisual.

“The new section, a navigable map of Italy displaying all the active productions on set at the time of consultation, offers significant added value to the audiovisual industry. A strategic database providing reliable, organized information that is finally available, public and transparent, will help increase knowledge of industry activities, both from a production and employment perspective” noted Chiara Sbarigia, President of Cinecittà which manages the operations of the national portal Italy for Movies.

“We thought it was useful to share the data we already possess, such as employment, professions and contracts, while refining statistical reliability. We hope that information relating to industry workers and their professional characteristics will become increasingly measurable and useful to all trade union activities. This helpful tool can also be gradually expanded with further information in the future and consulted by professionals, providing a service to those who already work in the industry and those who would like to”, commented Sabina Di Marco, National Secretary of Slc Cgil for Cultural Production.
