Albania – From the independence to the fall of communism
Only 60 miles divide the coasts of Italy to those of Albania, but in spite of this, most Italians started to hear about this country only after 1991 when the TV news showed the first boats crowded with immigrants landing along the coasts of Puglia. However, what did Albania and Albanians look like before those images? The Stalinism dominated the country for more than 40 years and seeing that it was one of the most oppressive form of government, it cut out Albania from the history of the rest of the world and especially from that world characterizing it when its historical events were strictly related to the Italian political events for a decade. From the fall of the Ottoman Empire to the First World War, from King Zog to the Italian occupation, from the rise of the dictator Ennver Hoxha to the end of Communism, this documentary traces the tormented history of that country in the XX Century with a special attention to historical details and thanks to images taken from Istituto Luce Archive and the Albanian Film Archive.
