The film tells the story of three very different characters. Sonia a beautiful but very superficial girl, infatuated by everything new that crosses her path Roberto, her boyfriend, a calm, disenchanted type who’s tormented by Sonia, who wants him to be more ambitious – like Carlo, the third protagonist, an unscrupulous busybody. The three characters come together for different reasons and necessities on an a flight to India along with Cesira, a Buddhist who organizes pilgrimages to meet a young and unknown guru: Subramanian. Sonia has converted to Buddhism with her usual superficiality; Roberto follows along with her, skeptical, Carlo is simply forced to get out of Italy for awhile. The impact of India on the three characters provokes unexpected reactions. Sonia soon tires of her new experience and arrives at the audience with the guru completely distracted by Carlo’s flattering intentions. Carlo immediately senses a deal in the air by taking advantage of the marketing appeal of the unknown guru, and convinces Cesira to become his partner. He goes back to Italy with a new business. Roberto, who was skeptical at the beginning, is the one most deeply affected by his encounter with Subramanian and with India. He succeeds in freeing himself from the destructive relationship with Sonia and grows fond of a deaf-mute child who is part of the entourage. The film leaves our characters back in Rome: Sonia, without Roberto returns to chasing her dreams; Carlo opens a new office and makes plans to build a big hotel near Madras as a vacation-pilgrimage destination for would-be Buddhists. Roberto goes back to his old life, a bit more calm and a bit more happy.
