An English holding company intends to buy the vineyards surrounding a small village to produce wine on a large scale. The town’s entrepreneur, Alessio Cortese, a cruel and powerful man, manages to buy all the vineyards from the farmers. A11 but one sells, Elia Zenghelis, coy and attached to his land, is the only one to refuse. Cortese tries to threaten Zenghelis into selling, isolating him from the rest of the village, which obeys Cortese’s orders leaving Elia alone to pick his grapes. Zenghelis seems to ignore the entrepreneur’s menaces and continues his work with the help of two black farm labourers and his loyal friend Demetrio. Clara Zenghelis, Elia’s daughter, contacts Cortese. Filled with hate for her father, who has already turned his back on her, Clara offers to help Cortese and together they make up a plan to kill Zenghelis. Things will not turn out quite as they’ve planned and there will be an unexpected ending.
