Antelope Cobbler
Annamaria Tamagni is a young girl who likes to steal useless objects. It’s the only time she feels truly alive, she says. For her, the supermarket is a sort of refuge. One day she hears news of a new investigation into the Lockheed case (a political scandal in 1976) on the radio. For fun, Annamaria decides to start using the pseudonym of the politician involved in the scandal: Antelope Cobbler. She goes to the supermarket, steals some automobile ball bearings and gets arrested. The manager of the supermarket, Luciano Luciani, is a curious man, and he looks for an explanation to this bizarre behavior. Personally he’s always considered theft a penal problem. The initial confrontation between the two characters become, during the day, a comparison between two people’s different impulses and desires. The discovery of an irrational side to his personality and the need to find a definitive answer to it drives the manager to a paradoxical gesture: he steals some ball bearings himself. Annamaria, who saw the meeting with the manager only as a challenge, abandons him when she sees he’s transformed himself into her accomplice.
