Gabriele D’Annunzio advocated an aristocratic plan for life as well as for art. His interventionist action in the First World War, in which he took part when he was fifty-two years old, first as a mounted soldier and then as an airman, makes him an upfront figure of Italian history. He spent the last years of his life in isolation in the wonderful villa of Vittoriale, looking towards the Lake of Garda.
