The director is usually on the set because that’s where he has to be. Almost always because that’s where he wants to be. He can design, write, edit the film but it is on the set that the director finds his place in the cinema and in the world because being on the set means that your project and your efforts have been successful and the film has begun. This documentary wants to tell, almost exclusively through the images already made on the sets of his films, a magic, the one that Giuliano Montaldo in his role as Director stages both in his films and in those where he participated as an actor. We did not want to make yet another portrait of a prestigious and humanly extraordinary man of cinema, what we tried to achieve is a very simple documentary and basically only editing and post production.A documentary that was born around the images and interviews made since the beginning of the 80s on the sets of films shot as a director and those of some films in which Montaldo has worked, even in the past, as an actor, as an assistant director or as an assistant director.Everything is told only through the repertoire interviews carried out during the production of the films in Italy and abroad to the director and to the actors and collaborators. There are no other interviews or images shot outside the sets, there are no interviews of friends, acquaintances or experts outside of those present during the filming of the films. The only ones outside the set are: Gillo Pontecorvo, Ennio Morricone and Carlo Lizzani who tell it from the beginning and in some aspects of his work. Interviews with Giuliano Montaldo and his collaborators were collected during the making of films directed by him or where he was an actor. Such as those from the backstage of “Il Caimano” by Nanni Moretti and “Tutto quello che vuoi” by Francesco Bruni. The last interview with Giuliano Montaldo was filmed in 2018 at his home. Among the interviewees the actors Nicolas Cage, Andrea Ferreol, Philippe Noiret. Among the collaborators, the directors of photography Blasco Giurato and Arnaldo Catinari.
