1843. Peters, the Danish Lutheran astronomer is asked to go to Sicily in order to build a meridian in the cathedral of Acireale. On his arrival, Peters is surrounded by suspicious diffidence and hostility as he begins his work, based on rigorous mathematical calculations. However, the Canon supervising the work, asks Peters to change the meridian’s path in order not to disturb an ancient tomb. The motive behind this request is not to safeguard the repose of the ancient nobility buried in the church, but to keep an old and disturbing secret hidden from prying eyes. Peters rebels against this obligation. His Lutheran and scientific discipline will not allow him to be dishonest. However, he is destined to be defeated.
