The idea for the film is based loosely on a drama by Rosario Garibaldi Bosco, father of a movement called Fasci Siciliani, as well as poet, playwriter and actor of his own material. The film is inspired on events that took place one hundred years ago in Caltavuturo, a small town near Palermo. On January 20 1893 the feast day of Saint Sebastian the martyr, a platoon of army sharp-shooters at the instigation of the local mafia, open fire on a crowd of peasants who were demonstrating their rights to ownership life, 30 are wounded, and more than 200 are arrested. In Sicily the echo of the massacre provoked protests and demonstrations of live a collection of funds was taken up that culminated in a huge demonstration at Caltavuturo. And from there nearly the entire island was the theater of revolts and uprisings that only the brutal repression of Crispi was able to suppress. Though it’s based on historical fact, the film attempts to portray a tragic story that could have happened in any age.
