The desert of the tartars
Lieutenant Drogo is a young officer sent by command to a fortress at the edge of the desert. He and his men lie in wait for an eventual encounter with their enemy, the Tartars. Time passes, however, and nothing happens. Meanwhile the Lieutenant can only look on as his dreams of glory fade away: he falls gravely ill without ever having had the chance to fight.
