The inexistent knight
One day a strange knight appears on the heals of Charlemagne fighting against the Saracen: all that exists of this knight is an empty, walking suit of armor and a voice that comes from nowhere. Spurned by doubts as to the legitimacy of his title, this strange knight, named Agilulf, leaves for Scotland in search of Lady Sophronia who is able to prove the authenticity of his title. Hopelessly in love with Agilulf, the paladin Bradamante tries to meet up with him, followed by her admirer Raimbaut. Meanwhile Torismund, an aspiring paladin needing to prove his noble origins, is also heading toward Scotland. They lose their way, however, ending up in extremely different places, while Agilulf is forced to follow Sophronia?s traces to Morocco where he finally finds his lady in the possession of the sultan. Able to strip her from him, Agilulf leads the noblewoman to where Charlemagne awaits, hiding her for the night in a cave. Torismund discovers her there, however, and takes her away. Therefore Agilulf, not being able to prove the credibility of his induction into knighthood, loses his only possibility for existence. In recompense Raimbaut, dressing himself in Agilulf?s now inert armor, finally finds Bradamante?s love.
