Maria Grande, whose name implies an Anna Magnani character, is not your typical Italian-American mother: she hates listening to Italian love songs and takes care more of her Bosnian neighbors than of her three children. Santino, a real mama’s boy, takes advantage of his mother’s distraction to pull off small heists with his two buddies so they can save up enough dough to make their dream come true: move to Miami, land of relaxation and bliss. But nothing is easy in life, especially when Maria involuntarily stumbles onto the scene and wrecks Santino’s petty robberies. Meanwhile Michael and Lucia, Maria’s older children, know that their kid brother wheels and deals with local gangsters and they will do anything to make their mother see Santino’s true color. Maria is tired of listening to her dead husband, who talks to her through a picture every night and who never has a kind word for Santino either. Maria tries her best to keep everyone at peace but to no avail. Giovanni, an old friend of the family, visiting from Italy, manages to distract Maria from her family quarrelling…
