MoMA and Cinecittà present: Marcello and Chiara Mastroianni, A Family Affair
Presented at MoMA in New York from December 12, 2024, to January 5, 2025, the program will feature 17 seminal films starring Marcello Mastroianni, including several newly restored by Cinecittà, alongside six acclaimed works featuring Chiara Mastroianni.
On the occasion of the centenary of Marcello Mastroianni’s birth, The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), in collaboration with Cinecittà, announces: Marcello and Chiara Mastroianni, A Family Affair, a significant retrospective celebrating the enduring legacy of the acclaimed Italian actor and the achievements of his daughter, Chiara Mastroianni. The retrospective will open on December 12, with Chiara Mastroianni introducing the U.S. premiere of Cinecittà’s 4K restoration of Luchino Visconti’s Le notti bianche (White Nights, 1957), together with Cinecittà’s president, Chiara Sbarigia.
“Marcello and Chiara Mastroianni, A Family Affair provides an opportunity to share Cinecittà’s core mission with audiences around the world, a mission built on three fundamental pillars of cinema: preservation, restoration, and dissemination,” states Chiara Sbarigia, President of Cinecittà. “It is both an honor and a tangible tribute to Marcello Mastroianni to present in New York the results of a meticulous restoration process that has brought films such as Le notti bianche (White Nights), La fortuna di essere donna (Lucky to Be a Woman), and Peccato che sia una canaglia (Too Bad She’s Bad) back to their original splendor, now enhanced with 4K definition. Following the success of past tributes to figures like Ennio Morricone, Bernardo Bertolucci, Roberto Rossellini, and Alice and Alba Rohrwacher, this retrospective marks a new chapter in Cinecittà’s more than two decades of collaboration with MoMA and underscores our commitment to sharing Italy’s cultural heritage with international audiences.”
In addition to presenting her father’s films, Chiara Mastroianni will introduce several of her most acclaimed works, including the U.S. premiere of Marcello Mio (2024), directed by Christophe Honoré, on December 13. Featured in this year’s Cannes Film Festival’s main competition, the film is a poignant dual portrait in which Chiara Mastroianni steps into several of her father’s iconic cinematic roles while also reflecting on her own life.
Born in 1972 to Marcello Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve, Chiara Mastroianni has built a distinguished career through collaborations with prominent directors in French and international cinema. Her debut in André Téchiné’s Ma saison préférée (My Favorite Season, 1993) earned her a César nomination, and her ongoing work with Christophe Honoré reflects her dedication to exploring complex characters.
“MoMA has always been one of my favorite places in New York, and so it’s deeply moving to have a retrospective devoted to my father Marcello and to me in such a palace of art and cinema. In celebrating my father’s work, we are also celebrating wonderful Italian filmmakers – not only the most famous of these like Visconti, Fellini and De Sica but also those deserving of greater recognition like Monicelli, Bolognini, and Pietrangeli” declared Chiara Mastroianni. “My father had a special bond with New York, He really loved this city, its architecture, its multicultural population, its electric atmosphere. I am so grateful to MoMA and Cinecittà for making this retrospective a reality on what would have been his hundredth year.”
“MoMA is pleased to collaborate with Cinecittà in recognizing the singular achievements of Marcello Mastroianni and Chiara Mastroianni, versatile actors of two generations who helped to define the culture of their times,” says Josh Siegel, Curator, Department of Film, The Museum of Modern Art. “Together with Chiara’s mother, Catherine Deneuve, who is also represented in this exhibition, they stand alongside cinema history’s other great family dynasties, among them the Kapoors of India, the Coppolas and Fondas of Hollywood, and the Bergman-Rossellinis of Italy and Sweden.”
Widely regarded as one of the most influential actors of the 20th century, Marcello Mastroianni (1924–1996) is celebrated for his collaborations with legendary directors such as Federico Fellini, Luchino Visconti, Ettore Scola, Michelangelo Antonioni, Marco Ferreri, Mario Monicelli, and Vittorio De Sica. Over a career spanning six decades, he appeared in 147 films, creating cinematic masterpieces that remain etched in the collective imagination.
Among the many accolades received by this iconic figure—who continues to be one of the most admired European actors in the United States—are two BAFTAs, two Coppa Volpi for Best Actor, and a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival, along with two Best Actor awards at Cannes, two Golden Globes, and five David di Donatello awards. Despite receiving three Academy Award nominations, including a groundbreaking nod in 1962 as the first male actor nominated for a non-English-language performance in Divorzio all’italiana (Divorce Italian Style), he never won the Oscar.
