“After the success of the complete retrospective of Luce Cinecittà at the MoMA in New York, the city of San Francisco is also celebrating the genius of modern cinema with a significant homage. This marks the beginning of a long tour in North America and the United Kingdom until 2019.

In 2017, the world paid tribute to the work of Michelangelo Antonioni in the tenth year since his passing, recognizing its strong influence on filmmakers, audiences, festivals, cinephiles, leading up to the most significant event: the comprehensive retrospective organized by Istituto Luce Cinecittà at MoMA in New York in December. The event, which restored the director’s role as an emblematic artist of the 20th century, culminated in public success. It didn’t stop in NY but resumes from San Francisco on April 28th at the famous Castro Theatre: a day entirely dedicated to Antonioni featuring five masterpieces, ‘L’avventura,’ ‘L’eclisse,’ ‘Il deserto rosso,’ ‘Blow-up,’ and ‘Professione: reporter.’

An unmissable event organized by Istituto Luce Cinecittà, which annually brings retrospectives of great figures of Italian cinema to the city of hi-tech, such as Dino Risi, Anna Magnani, and Bernardo Bertolucci. The event, locally organized through Cinema Italia San Francisco, has the collaboration of the Italian Cultural Institute, the Consulate General of Italy in San Francisco, and the Leonardo da Vinci Society, with the support of the General Cinema Directorate of MibaCT.

The day will be preceded by the presentation on Thursday, April 26th, of one of this year’s editorial events: the volume ‘Il mio Antonioni,’ edited by Cineteca di Bologna and Istituto Luce Cinecittà, curated by Carlo di Carlo. It is created through the editing of statements, interviews, and conversations with the director.

After San Francisco, the Michelangelo Antonioni retrospective will be featured in Toronto during the summer (in collaboration with the International Festival and the Cineteca di Toronto) and at the prestigious University of Berkeley. It will then continue to the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles in September, Nashville, the Seattle Festival (September-October), Chicago; in December, it will be at the exclusive National Gallery of Art in Washington, to land in 2019 at the glorious British Film Institute in London and continue the tour in the United Kingdom until June.
